Israel’s infamous Yarkon River was once a place of life and hope, but through human neglect and greed it became a place of tragedy and destruction. Told through archival materials and personal stories (including vivid reminiscences by Arik Einstein), Avi Belkin’s film elegantly portrays the history of Israel and its peoples’ connections to this ever-changing river. In the 1930’s and 40’s, the Yarkon was a hot spot for recreation; but by the 60’s it had transformed into a cesspool of toxicity. A cautionary tale of environmental destruction, this is a fascinating look at what happens when people try to tame nature and the pains they take to reverse the damage.
