The teenage residents of Home One, a children’s concentration camp within Terezin, created a secret weekly magazine called VEDEM that chronicled their daily lives. In 2010, Music of Remembrance commissioned Vedem, an oratorio based on the boys’ experiences, to be performed by the Seattle Boychoir. As the choristers learn about the Holocaust, the survivors of Terezin—among them, Toronto’s George Brady, brother of Hana Brady (Inside Hana’s Suitcase)—reflect on their own experiences in anticipation of reuniting in Seattle for the premiere of the oratorio. A testament to the inability for creativity to be stifled, even under the most challenging conditions.
