Directed by Academy Award® nominee Oren Jacoby (Sister Rose’s Passion, TJFF 2005) and narrated by Isabella Rossellini, this documentary reveals the untold saga of how cycling legend Gino Bartali helped a network of Italians save the lives of thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Italy. Bartali’s triumph at the 1938 Tour de France was held up by Mussolini as an example of the superiority of the Italian ‘race.’ Bartali, an anti-fascist, used his cycling skills to transport false documents throughout Tuscany, helping Jews escape to safety. My Italian Secret weaves together Bartali’s story with those of other heroic Italians and the very Jews whose lives were saved by their courage.
